Router-assisted layered multicast

چکیده
Several layered multicast protocols have been proposed for congestion control in real-time multicast applications. Most of them are pure end-to-end protocols, thus having difficulty in coordinating receivers and coping with traffic variations. In this paper, we propose RALM, a new receiver-driven router-assisted layered multicast protocol. RALM achieves much better performance at the expense of moderate additional complexity in the network. RALM is incrementally deployable. We evaluate RALM through simulations, and compare its performance with RLM, the well known layered multicast protocol.

Avoiding Unnecessary Congestion Responses in Layered Multicast with Heterogeneous Receivers
Receiver-driven layered multicast has been designed to support scalable multimedia applications and very recently used to support bulk file transfers. Layered multicast congestion control assumes that all the receivers behind a bottleneck are equally able to subscribe to a particular number of cumulative layers. This paper explores the requirement placed on heterogeneous receivers behind a bott...
متن کاملNetwork-Supported Rate Control Mechanism for Multicast Streaming Media
Layered Multicasting with layered source coding scheme enables efficient distribution of real-time streaming media over heterogeneous networks such as the Internet. In layered multicast, rate control is required to cope with congestion quickly because packet losses in a layer with higher priority lead greater degradation of received quality. In addition, rate control for layered multicast is re...
متن کاملLayered multicast with forward error correction (FEC) for Internet video
In this paper, we propose RALF, a new FEC-based error control protocol for layered multicast video. RALF embodies two design principles: decoupling transport layer error control from upper layer mechanisms and decoupling error control and congestion control at the transport layer. RALF works with our previously proposed protocol RALM — a layered multicast congestion control protocol with router...

Congestion control for IP multicast on the Internet has been one of the main issues that challenge a rapid deployment of IP multicast. In this article, we survey and discuss the most important congestion control schemes for multicast video applications on the Internet. We start with a discussion of the different elements of a multicast congestion control architecture. A congestion control schem...
